Santa’s Mode of Transportation

During a recent holiday party, a question was asked whether the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus), known colloquially in North America as the caribou was an endangered species in New York.  This may be a pressing question for some of you, given how close we are to December 25, and Santa’s use of this species to delivery gifts around the world.

There are currently no extant (i.e., existing) wild populations of reindeer in New York State.  According to the Reindeer Owners and Breeders Association, there are several small captive herds in parts of New York, such as at “Santa’s Hitching Post” in Mayfield, Ballston Spa, Pine City, and Hamburg. One can also see reindeer at the Finnish Lapland Nordic Ski Center in Northville NY, and there may have been reindeer at Santa’s Village in Jay New York.  Reindeer/caribou were once native to New York State, at least on a geologic time scale, for fossils of caribou bones have been found in Westchester, Schenectady, Genesee, and Orange counties. Dated fossils indicate that this species existed in New York during two periods – the late Pleistocene (about 11,000 to 8,000 years before present) and the later Holocene, (950 to 250 years before present).

Given that the latter period is relatively recent, caribou may more properly be classified as a species that has been extirpated (become extinct) in New York.  Archeological evidence suggests that during the middle woodland period a chain of Native American rib restaurants may have played a role in this extirpation, since pork ribs were not available until the period of European settlement.  Fossils found in an excavation during construction of the Dinosaur Barbecue restaurant in Troy, New York included fire-charred caribou bones, potsherds on which were found traces of vinegar and maple-syrup based sauces, and fragments of textiles that may have served as moist towelettes. Further studies are needed before the cause of the extirpation of New York caribou can be solidly ascribed to the predilection of pre-Columbian inhabitants for the meat on the thoracic bones of this cervid.

So, yes Virginia…there is a Santa Claus.  But the reindeer that drive his sleigh do not come from New York State, at least not any more.
