Interstate Brands Corporation, East Brunswick Facility, Groundwater Remediation
The Interstate Brands Corporation's (IBC) East Brunswick, New Jersey Facility is a former bakery facility that also housed a bakery thrift store and a vehicle maintenance garage. In 1997, tetrachloroethene (PCE) contamination was detected in groundwater in the vicinity of the vehicle maintenance garage during the removal of underground storage tanks, which serviced the facility. Once the extent of the contamination was determined, IBC with the help of The Chazen Companies (TCC) initiated an innovative in-situ bioremediation pilot study called Biolance in 2003. Under the Biolance remedial system, bacteria and nutrients are injected into the contaminated aquifer where a low voltage electric field has been created with cathodes and anodes. The Biolance pilot study setup activities included the installation of several temporary monitoring points, cathode and anode point installation and wiring, baseline groundwater sampling, injection point installation, and system start-up. Operation of the pilot study was initiated in December 2003 and involved monthly injections of bacteria and nutrients as well as monthly groundwater quality monitoring.
