Rome Sand Plains Management Plan
Chazen prepared a management plan for the Rome Sand Plains, a 5,000 acre natural area within the City of Rome New York. The Sand Plains is a unique natural area consisting of a rare pine barrens ecosystem interspersed with several types of wetlands. The Sand Plains is owned by a mix of private, government and conservation landowners. The purpose of the management plan was to develop a unified strategy for managing the different landscapes, especially given the multiple ownerships involved. Chazen conducted an extensive public outreach program which resulted in the plan's recommendations being accepted by the landowners. The plan contains detailed recommendations for restoring endangered species and for managing several ecosystems that are in transition. The plan also contains recommendations for improving recreational access, increasing educational opportunities and conducting scientific research.
