Mark Kastner, P.E.
Senior Principal, President
Mark is a Senior Principal and President of The Chazen Companies. He has more than 30 years of professional experience, including over 25 as a senior leader in several medium-sized organizations, and has a strong background in finance, operations and general corporate management. Mark became a Principal and shareholder of the firm in 2009. Prior to becoming Chazen’s President in 2008, he served as the firm’s Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer since 2001. Mark previously held the positions of Controller and Chief Financial Officer of several Hudson Valley-based companies. He is a licensed professional engineer, and earned an MBA from Union College and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Clarkson University. He serves on several boards, including Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp., Hudson Valley Economic Development Corp., Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress, The Council of Industry, and Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries / Clarkson University.
Rick Loewenstein, Jr., P.E.
Chief Operating Officer
Rick is the Chief Operating Officer of The Chazen Companies. He has over 35 years of professional experience and is a licensed professional engineer. Prior to joining Chazen he was Senior Vice President and Director of Engineering for CHA Consulting in Albany. Rick earned his BS degree in Forest Engineering from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and a BS and MS in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University. He is licensed in 10 states and has held a number of professional and civic leadership positions. Rick is responsible for providing senior-level strategic and operational leadership for Chazen’s technical staff and services, including project delivery, client management, and staff management and development.
Steven J. Alex, P.L.S.
Senior Principal, Vice President, Land Surveying Services
With over 30 years of experience in land surveying and land development, Steve works closely with many regional developers, attorneys, title companies, local and state agencies, providing high-quality land surveying services, consultation and problem solving surveying solutions from project inception through completion. As Senior Principal and Vice President of Surveying Services, Steve is responsible for the overall program direction, quality assurance, and management of survey services and coordination of survey personnel throughout Chazen’s network of offices.
Joseph M. Lanaro, P.E., M.ASCE
Senior Principal, Vice President, Engineering Services
As Senior Principal and Vice President of Engineering, Joe is responsible for strategic and operational elements of engineering services across the company. He is responsible for the management of the engineering service line portfolio and development of department policies, procedures and standards and is the Senior Principal-in-Charge for complex and diverse private and public interest/sector projects, providing quality control and assurance for engineering applications and forensic and expert witness/litigation support services.
Joe is a general practitioner of civil engineering with diverse experience including: urban/suburban land and transportation planning; field surveying, environmental and water resource engineering; geotechnical engineering; building envelope and structural engineering related to horizontal and vertical structures; and construction administration, engineering and management.
His experience spans 30 years, has varied from projects conceptualization through detailed design and the development of construction documentation; and continued through construction and commissioning. The projects Joe has worked on varied from assignment and include, in general: site planning and development; field reconnaissance and topographic survey; environmental assessments, investigations and design of remedial systems; geotechnical investigations, interpretations and geotechnical design solutions; structural investigations, analysis and design of horizontal and vertical structures; storm water management including storm water collection, treatment and routing, as well as flood controls; water supply, storage, treatment and distribution (including experience as a NYSDOH certified Class C water systems operator); wastewater collection, treatment and disposal; highway analysis and design; and related experiences associated with entitlement; NYS SEQR and NEPA; financing (grants and special district formation); and construction bidding, award, administration, management and commissioning.
Stuart Mesinger, AICP
Senior Principal, Vice President, Land Development
Stuart has over 35 years’ experience in land use planning and development, environmental impact review, geographic information systems, and is a former town and county planner in upstate New York. He is an expert on the land development process and has managed approvals for some of the largest and most complex projects in New York State. Stuart is a SEQRA expert who has authored numerous environmental impact statements and he also assists municipalities with SEQRA reviews. He routinely teaches classes in land use planning, development and environmental review and represents applicants before planning and zoning boards. Stuart manages Chazen's Land Development Group in which capacity he oversees the plan development and approval process for the firm's land development projects.
Christopher Round, AICP
Senior Principal, Vice President, Planning Services
Chris has 30 years of experience in providing land use planning and environmental services to local government, institutions and private clients. As Vice President of Planning, he is responsible for the overall operations of the Chazen’s Planning service line and the management of complex interdisciplinary projects. Chris is experienced in the development of municipal plans and land use regulations, public participation and outreach efforts, as well as securing grant funds for public and private entities. Prior to joining The Chazen Companies, Chris served as the Director of Community Development for Queensbury, NY overseeing the Town’s planning and permitting operations.
Russell Urban-Mead, PG, LEED® AP
Senior Principal, Vice President, Environmental Services
Russell is an Environmental Scientist and Senior Hydrogeologist with 23 years of work experience at The Chazen Companies. He directs water supply investigations and regional aquifer and water resource assessments to develop new water sources and water resource management plans. Russell contributes to brownfield, gasoline station, dry cleaner, and inactive hazardous waste site remediation as a NYSDEC Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP). He also prepares air program registration and state Facility permits, oversees Indoor Air Quality investigations, and supervises campus and industrial regulatory compliance programs. In 2011, Russell became Vice President of Chazen’s Environmental Services team, providing strategic program direction and overseeing the firm’s geologists, property transfer ESA and ACM/Pb personnel, Health & Safety training and consulting professionals, and wetland and ecological specialists.
Russell is a Senior Principal and discipline expert witness at The Chazen Companies, and a frequently-requested public speaker, presenting groundwater flow and planning concepts to professional and public audiences. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Hudson River Watershed Alliance, for whom he organizes a monthly speaker series. His personal interests include small-parcel agriculture, renewable energy, stream and shoreline restoration, and strategic climate change adaptation.
Senior Director, Marketing and Business Development
Sylvia has over 25 years of experience in marketing, communications and management. Prior to joining The Chazen Companies she served as Director of Marketing for the global firm JMC Marketing Communications & PR. Prior to that she held marketing positions in hospitals, manufacturing, insurance and public policy organizations. Sylvia has developed strategies for business development, corporate communications and marketing and led the implementation of public relations, advertising, branding programs, websites, social media initiatives and multiple internal and external events.
Sylvia is a graduate of Johnson and Wales University, Providence, RI. She has served on several boards including the Chamber of Commerce of Ulster County and the Gateway Foundation, and is currently serving on the YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County Board of Directors. Sylvia is an active board member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) and member of the American Marketing Association (AMA).
Lauren Gillett, PHR
Senior Principal, Vice President, Human Resources
Lauren has over 20 years of professional Human Resources experience, including previous experience as a Human Resources Generalist in multiple director-level roles at organizations in a variety of industries.
Lauren has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (Cum Laude) from Colgate University, a Master of Science Degree in Industrial Labor Relations (HR concentration) from the Baruch Graduate School of Business and Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations. She also holds a PHR certification from the Human Resources Institute. Throughout her career Lauren has been active in a multitude of community and technical organizations. She served on the board for both the American Heart Association and the Greater Southern Dutchess Chamber of Commerce. Lauren is currently a Compensation & Benefits Committee Member for the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, as well as a board member for the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce.
Vice President, Information Technology & Technical Services
As Vice President of Information Technology Services, Joe is responsible for the network infrastructure and communication systems throughout the Chazen’s offices including the design, development and implementation of all information systems, including hardware, software applications, phone, video systems and cloud services. Under his direction, the internal IT department provides all associated helpdesk, end user support and problem solving of these systems throughout the company. In addition, Joe is responsible for the oversight and execution of AutoCAD Standards and guidelines throughout all disciplines company wide.
Also as an engaged member of the Executive Senior Management Team, Joe provides a well-rounded and knowledgeable point of view within all aspects of the business while using his expertise and vision in planning, budgeting, evaluation and implementation of company-wide initiatives daily.
Chief Financial Officer
Don has over 35 years of business experience, including over 25 years as a corporate financial executive with experience in healthcare, high-tech, manufacturing and banking industries. He has a proven record of helping companies increase revenue and profitability, and his experience ranges from a start-up, family-owned company up to a publicly-traded corporation. Previously, Don was CFO of Wolf-tec, Inc., a Kingston-based manufacturer of high-end food processing equipment. Prior to Wolf-tec, Don was a controller for several other Hudson Valley companies.
Don has a Bachelor of Science in Accounting (Cum Laude) from SUNY Binghamton and an MBA in International Business (summa cum laude) from SUNY New Paltz. Throughout his career Don has been active in several community, technical and industry organizations. He currently serves on The Solar Energy Consortium’s finance committee.
Richard Chazen, P.E.
Richard has over 40 years of experience as a businessman and civil engineer. He has developed particular expertise in all aspects of municipal engineering, including planning, design construction and administration.
Richard has been involved with the firm nearly all of his life. Since joining the firm full time in 1975, he has developed extensive experience in land development, water supply facilities, wastewater facilities investigations and grantsmanship, community redevelopment projects, and State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) procedures and requirements. Richard has extensive practical experience which leads to exceptional problem solving capabilities in the engineering and environmental areas and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Syracuse University. Throughout his career, he has served on boards of several local organizations, including several decades as a Trustee of Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Daniel W. Stone, P.E.
Dan has over 40 years of experience in civil and environmental engineering. His career experience ranges from project design and management to administrative and executive responsibilities in all phases of environmental site assessments, water, wastewater, and industrial and municipal programs. Dan joined the firm in 1980, and his experience includes management of all company environmental programs, including groundwater resource development, groundwater containment investigations, water, wastewater and industrial waste treatment facility design, landfill design, chemical engineering, environmental data management, and regulatory interface. Dan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and received his Master’s in Environmental Engineering from the University of Vermont.
Bernard Adler, P.E.
President, Adler Consulting (A Chazen Company)
Bernie has over 50 years of experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering. He started his own business, Adler Consulting, in 1991 which recently became part of The Chazen Companies. Bernie has worked with clients in real estate, government, healthcare facilities, religious and cultural institutions and education for both the public and private sectors. He is a recipient of the Ivor S. Wisepart Engineer of the Year Award and the Harvey Boutwell Distinguished Service Award from ITE; Outstanding Engineer in Government, Westchester County Chapter, NSPE; and, the Alumni Service Award, CCNY Alumni Association. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
