Union College

Working with a design build team, Chazen provided civil engineering, landscape architecture and state/municipal permitting services for this 80-bed, three-story supervised residence. The site and structure design were developed to compliment the surrounding residential neighborhood’s architectural character. Construction required relocation of fiber optic lines, power/communication lines and gas mains as well as the removal of a portion of an abandoned canal. Stormwater runoff was captured and treated through the installation of underground infiltration chambers designed in accordance with NYSDEC’s Stormwater Management Design Manual. This was a fast track project that involved the preparation of multiple bid packages in order to maintain the aggressive schedule required to meet the College’s needs. The team successfully secured two variances and site plan approval within three months of submitting the applications to the City.

SUNY Maritime College

Chazen provided civil engineering and landscape architecture services for the preparation of construction drawings and specifications for roadway and sidewalk restoration at the College. The project involved the restoration of approximately one-half mile of campus roads, parking lots and associated curbing as well as the replacement of concrete sidewalks and courtyard areas with various paver systems. Retaining walls and other site features such as pedestrian gathering areas were included in the design. The site grading design was developed in a manner which ensured ADA compliance.

Purchase College

Chazen provided civil engineering for 5.4 acres of deck rehabilitation at SUNY Purchase. The project involved replacement of existing pavers, a series of raised planting beds, site lighting alterations and utility modifications including the addition of an irrigation system and selective drainage piping replacement and cleaning. Chazen worked closely with representatives of the NYSDEC, State University Construction Fund and project architect to secure approvals for the proposed improvements in six weeks. Chazen was also responsible for providing construction administration services.

Siena College

Chazen completed civil engineering, land survey and landscape architecture services for the conversion of an old campus library building into the new Sarazan Student Union. The project included selective demolition of the existing structure along with numerous utility modifications required in order to expand the existing building and modify both interior and exterior spaces. Landscape design elements included development of two exterior courtyard spaces linking the interior and exterior uses into unified multi-use spaces. Exterior landscape improvements included custom detailing of handicap accessible ramps and stairs, exterior lighting and ornamental landscape plantings designed to enhance the aesthetics of the building’s exterior facades.

Union College

Chazen was responsible for surveying, civil engineering, landscape architecture, SEQRA/municipal permitting and construction administration on the renovation and expansion of the existing five-wing Science and Engineering complex. The renovation and expansion took place while all services remained opened, so the project required significant and careful coordination. The addition also required relocation of critical campus-wide infrastructure including fiber optic, gas, electric, steam, chilled water, storm and sanitary mains.

Fulton-Montgomery Community College

Chazen prepared a design for the recently-constructed Perrella Sculpture Garden and World Trade Center Memorial at Fulton-Montgomery College. The new sculpture garden weaves campus visitors in and out of intimate seating plazas through an array of sculptural elements and a custom fountain with views toward the scenic countryside. The visitor’s eye is ultimately guided up to a reclaimed sculptural mass of antennae from the North World Trade Tower sitting atop a memorial plinth on the North end of the garden. The memorial is designed in such a fashion so that the point of the antennae’s shadow annually falls directly upon two stone obelisks set in the landscape at precisely the times the towers fell on September 11th.

SUNY New Paltz

Chazen provided civil/site design, land survey and geotechnical engineering services for the SUNY New Paltz Student Union Building renovation and addition project. The project included an 11,000-square foot transparent glass addition located on the elevated Haggerty Plaza. Existing offices below the Plaza were retained and renovated. Stormwater and sanitary sewer utilities were relocated through internal building routing in the new addition. Described as the most environmentally-friendly project on the campus, the new addition utilizes several energy-efficient and sustainable design practices including low/zero impact mechanical and electrical support systems, daylight harvesting, incorporated materials with low volatile organic compounds, and salvaging or recycling 50% of the construction and demolition by-products.

University at Albany

The Dutch Quad’s existing interior roadway and pedestrian walkway network had deteriorated, drainage systems had silted in and failed, and the trees were stressed by disease. Lighting was insufficient and conflicts between vehicular traffic were significant. Chazen provided design services that improved safety, enhanced the student environment and added versatility to the landscape.

The updated design restricts vehicular traffic to a smaller area, which also provides for parking, including ADA-compliant parking. The balance of the Quad is now devoted to pedestrian use in an urban park-like setting. Reconstruction work required the removal of existing pavements and replacement of most subsurface utilities including sanitary sewers, storm drainage and irrigation systems. Existing trees were evaluated for general health, and over 200 trees were removed and replaced. Enhanced gathering nodes were constructed to provide settings for students to congregate and study. New diagonal cross connections provide enhanced circulation and improved safety. Signature landscape elements include benches, trash receptacles, lighting standards and fixtures, pavement systems and bollards.

Skidmore College

Chazen updated the College’s Spill, Prevention, Control and Countermeasure Plan (SPCC) providing compliance updates, equipment reviews, engineering certification and training.

Culinary Institute of America

Chazen was contracted to obtain site development permits for the construction of additional student housing on its main campus located on Route 9 to provide accommodation for 304 students. Gravity sanitary sewer collection system conveyed wastewater from the new student housing to a new sanitary sewer pump station. The wet well mounted pump station pumps the waste to the existing campus gravity sanitary sewer collection system via a 6-inch diameter sewer forcemain. Responsibilities included the preparation of detailed plans and specifications for the on-site sanitary sewer pump station, standby emergency generator, and associated sewer forcemain, regulatory agencies approval, construction services, start-up and commissioning.
