Tapestry on the Hudson & Sky Garden

Troy, NY

Chazen prepared applications and engineering reports/plan on behalf Community Builders to secure GIGP funding from EFC for critical elements of an adaptive redevelopment of a deteriorated commercial building located in the Hoosick Street Waterfront District. The redevelopment of the existing historic 84,000-square foot, seven-story, brick-masonry and wood-frame building, led by Dave Sadowsky Architect, PC, was highlighted by Chazen’s design of the innovative “sky garden” construction design which included green roof sections, rainwater cistern, permeable pavers, bioretention area, raised planters, tree planters, playground and lawn space.

The elevated greenspace construction was completed in the summer of 2017.

Lake George Gateway

Lake George, NY

The Town of Lake George retained Chazen to assist the community in developing a new vision for Route 9, the gateway to this tourist destination, with the goal of transforming a sea of pavement to a Complete Green Street. The Vision Plan identified traffic calming measures including a planted median, mid-block pedestrian signals/crossing, permeable pavements, native plantings and other green infrastructure techniques. The Plan was successful in securing community support and over $7M in construction funding.

Chazen engineers and landscape architects subsequently supported the project preparing design documents and plans, specifications and estimates. Chazen’s principal role in stormwater collection and conveyance systems is to incorporate green infrastructure practices that conform to NYSDOT design criteria. Green infrastructure practices included the use of tree boxes fitted with infiltration systems to capture and treat all runoff from newly installed pedestrian systems. Tree grates also utilized non-conventional “flexi-pave”, a porous treatment. Landscape elements were developed to aide in traffic calming and create a gateway affect utilizing native species. Center island medians were utilized for traffic calming and to provide pedestrian refuge. The design process was expedited by NYSDOT in order to secure/retain capital project funding and maintain an aggressive/expedited construction schedule. Chazen services included environmental screening in support of the design document, public outreach/meeting facilitation, stormwater analysis, design and permitting and landscape architecture services.

Forever Wild Water Company

Jay, NY

Chazen was retained by the Forever Wild Water Company (FWWC) to assist in the evaluation of its existing finished water storage tank. The tank was constructed in the early 1960s and was in a state of disrepair. Chazen performed an alternatives analysis of tank styles for the replacement of the existing tank. Chazen also provided assistance to the FWWC with coordinating with the NYS Department of Public Service and Adirondack Park Agency. After selecting the preferred alternative Chazen designed the replacement tank. In addition to the tank design, Chazen provided design services associated with a monitoring and control system for the FWWC’s remote well and pump station sites.

Angry Orchard

Walden, NY

Chazen worked with the Boston Beer Company to develop a cidery for their Angry Orchard brand cider. Chazen was responsible for all aspects of site design including survey, master planning, civil/site design, water supply, wastewater disposal, and stormwater management. Chazen conducted structural evaluations of several barns being re-purposed for the project and developed a groundwater treatment system so that source water will meet the company’s exacting water quality standards. Chazen obtained site plan and special permit approvals from the Planning Board and designed sustainable features including a grass-pave parking system, permeable pavement and rain gardens. The project has become a tourist destination and a showpiece for the company’s brand.

Chazen was contracted to obtain site development permits for the construction of additional student housing on its main campus located on Route 9 to provide accommodation for 304 students. Gravity sanitary sewer collection system conveyed wastewater from the new student housing to a new sanitary sewer pump station. The wet well mounted pump station pumps the waste to the existing campus gravity sanitary sewer collection system via a 6-inch diameter sewer forcemain. Responsibilities included the preparation of detailed plans and specifications for the on-site sanitary sewer pump station, standby emergency generator, and associated sewer forcemain, regulatory agencies approval, construction services, start-up and commissioning.
