Lake George Route 9 Gateway PlanAugust 3, 2017
The Town of Lake George, with funding assistance from the Adirondack/Glens Falls Transportation Council, retained Chazen to assist in developing a new vision for US Route 9, the gateway to this tourist destination, with the goal of transforming a sea of pavement to a Complete Street. Chazen first prepared a Vision Plan identified traffic calming measures including a planted median, mid-block pedestrian signals/crossing, permeable pavements, native plantings and other green infrastructure techniques. The Plan was successful in securing community support and over $7M in design and construction funding.
Chazen subsequently prepared design documents and plans, specifications and estimates for various project elements. Green infrastructure practices included the use of tree boxes fitted with infiltration systems to capture and treat runoff from newly installed sidewalks. Tree grates also utilized non-conventional “flexi-pave”, a porous treatment. Landscape elements such as center islands utilizing native species were developed to aide in traffic calming and create a gateway affect. The design process was expedited by NYSDOT in order to secure/retain capital project funding and maintain an aggressive construction schedule. Subsequent Chazen services included environmental screening in support of the design document, public outreach/meeting facilitation, stormwater analysis, design and permitting (SWPPP), and landscape architecture services.
